UK Passes Landmark Tobacco and Vapes Bill Introducing Lifetime Smoking Ban for Younger Generation
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill has finally been passed by the UK Parliament, bringing about an unprecedented lifetime ban on the sale of cigarettes to any person born after January 1, 2009. The "milestone" bill seeks to produce the country’s first ever smoke-free generation by ensuring that all children under the age of 17 cannot buy tobacco products ever again. Apart from the ban on the sale of tobacco products, the UK government will also be able to implement regulations regarding flavorings and packaging of vape products. Furthermore, vaping in vehicles containing children, in playgrounds, and around schools and hospitals will also be banned. Even though health experts have hailed the passing of this bill as the biggest public health measure in a generation, which will save many lives and take some burden off the NHS, critics have pointed out its potential drawbacks on retailers.
